The UC-HTT-M counter scale from METTLER TOLEDO’s UC Evo Line has won a Red Dot Award in the Product Design category. This internationally coveted award attests to the outstanding quality of the UC Evo Line’s aesthetic and functional design.
Awarded annually by Germany’s Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen, the Red Dot Award is an internationally recognized quality label for excellent design. “We are absolutely delighted to have received this renowned prize for the UC-HTT-M,” states Lena Wolf, who as Product Manager of Retail at METTLER TOLEDO is responsible for the UC Evo Line. “Food retailers have long realized that they can gain a competitive edge with a modern, stylish presentation at their fresh food counters. Scales play an important part in the overall look, as we’ve seen with the success of our Black Line scales in the color black. The Red Dot Award for our UC Evo Line has now confirmed our sense of contemporary and first-class design at the food counter.”
Fundamentally functional
The UC-HTT-M counter scale is characterized by its simple, clean lines. Decorative details have been eliminated from the touchscreen-operated scale in favor of smooth surfaces and clearly defined shapes. The narrow housing and slim borders around the displays place the focus firmly on functionality. This restrained design ensures that the scale’s large customer display draws – and holds – shoppers’ attention, thus making the display the ideal platform for promoting products and brands to consumers at the point of sale.
Design – more than simply looking good
Functionality and day-to-day practicality are also fundamental to the way the scale has been designed on the operator side. There is nothing to distract sales employees from their activities on the clearly laid-out touchscreen. Furthermore, the UC-HTT-M’s housing is largely free of joints or grooves which could harbor dirt, thus reducing the time employees need to spend cleaning the device. High-quality materials ensure that the unit is robust and durable. In addition, the UC-HTT-M’s die-cast aluminum housing is not only elegant but also energy-saving, since it allows waste heat to be expelled from the metal housing without needing a fan.
From the counter to the design exhibition
The Red Dot Award ceremony is due to take place on 2 July 2012 in the Aalto-Theater in Essen, Germany. From 3 to 29 July 2012, the UC-HTT-M will be on display as an exhibit: the scale will join other 2012 Red Dot Award winners in a special exhibition at the Red Dot Design Museum on the site of the former Zeche Zollverein coal mine and industrial complex in Essen.
The Red Dot Design award
The Red Dot Design Award, whose origins reach back to the 1950s, is carried out in three disciplines: the “Red Dot Award: Product Design,” the “Red Dot Award: Communication Design” and the “Red Dot Award: Design Concept.” In 2011 alone, more than 14,000 entries from over 70 countries were registered. The award – the Red Dot – has established itself internationally as one of the most appreciated quality seals for outstanding designs.
